As many of you probably have noticed, there has been an ever increasing demand for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Comic Book related films. With THE DARK KNIGHT having already broken many records, and set to overtake TITANIC in largest gross ever Hollywood has turned its colossal eye to the fan base of these genres. With movies like WATCHMEN, GI JOE, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, and TV series like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, THE BIONIC WOMAN, TERMINATOR, and THE CLONE WARS, Studios and merchants descended on San Diego this weekend for COMIC CON 2008.

I have been attending this event every year since I moved to Southern California in 2001 and since then, it has become enormous, with major stars like Samuel Jackson, Hugh Jackman, Jet Li, Scarlett Johansen And entire casts from upcoming features like THE SPIRIT showing up to please the fans and talk about upcoming projects. Many people are sad to see the giant film studios overtake what was once a small convention of comic book collectors and with crowds of 50000 people, you can imagine, it gets a little crazy. However, there is no other venue for fans of sci fi, anime, fantasy and movies to get up close and personal to the stars and creators of their favorite series and films. And of course.. Dress up.

コミック・コン2008



多くの方がご存知かもしれないが、SFやファンタジー、コミックに関連した映画の需要が増加し続けている。『ダークナイト』が数々の記録を打ち破り、『タイタニック』の歴代最高興行収入を更新しようかという勢いの中、ハリウッドはこれらの固定ファンをベースにしたジャンルにその視線を移している。そして「ウォッチメン」「G.I. ジョー」「マスターズ・オブ・ユニバース」などの映画や、「バトルスター・ギャラクティカ」「バイオニック・ジェニー」「ターミネーター」『スターウォーズ/クローン・ウォーズ』などのTVシリーズを引っさげ、メジャー各社や企業が今週末、コミック・コン2008の為にサンディエゴにやって来たのだ。

僕は2001年に南カリフォルニアに越して以来、毎年このイベントに参加しているが、当時と比べると規模が膨大になっており、サミュエル・ジャクソンやヒュー・ジャックマン、ジェット・リー、スカーレット・ヨハンソンといった大物スターがいたり、新作「スピリット」の全キャストが登場しファンを喜ばせ、企画について話したりする。かつてはコミック本のコレクターの為のこじんまりとしたコンベンションだったのが、巨大な映画メジャー会社に乗っ取られてしまい、寂しい思いをしている人も多い。50,00人もの人となると、想像いただけるだろうか、少しおかしくもなる。しかし、SFや、アニメ、ファンタジーや映画ファンにとって、ここまで間近にお気に入りのTVシリーズや映画のスターやクリエイターにお近づきになれる機会は他にない。そしてもちろん...コスプレ出来る機会も。
